New Year, New Venue, New Talk!
The first talk of 2018 hosted by the Killaloe-Ballina Local History Society will take place on Wednesday 31st January at 7pm in Wood and Bell Café, Main Street, Killaloe.
Lough Derg and Its Islands by Gerard Madden will discuss the history and folklore attached to the 376 islands on Lough Derg, the largest and most beautiful of the great lakes on the River Shannon.
Probably the most well-known of these 376 islands is Holy Island or Inis Cealtra, which is one of the most famous monastic sites in Ireland, and contains the ruins of churches, an 80 foot round tower, and several crosses, all built before the year 1,000. The island is also associated with the famous Irish chieftain Brian Ború.
East Clare historian Gerard Madden has spent the last twenty-seven years taking groups by boat to Holy Island, and prior to this he spent twenty years fishing on the lake, so there is no-one more knowledgeable to speak on the history of Lough Derg. Gerard has also written a number of books on the history of parts of East Clare, of Lough Derg, Holy Island and most recently, Scariff Workhouse Union.
So come on down to Wood and Bell Cafe (we will be in the back section) at 7pm. Free entry, and everyone is welcome!
Gerard will kick off the first of an exciting programme of talks for 2018, and it will also be the first talk in our new venue, Wood and Bell Café, the use of which has been most generously offered to the local history society free of charge for 2018.
