We are delighted to announce September’s lecture will take place on Wednesday evening, 18th September at 7.30pm.
Professor Des McHale (UCC) and Yvonne Cohen will take us on a journey through the life of Mary Ann Boole (1818 – 1887, sister of Gerorge, First Professor of Mathematics at University of Cork. Mary Ann was Governess at Clarisford Palace for approximately 20 years. Her pupil George Francis Fitzgerald went on to become Professor of Physics at Trinity College, Dublin.
The talk will be in four parts:
Who was George Boole and why was he famous?
Details of Mary Ann Boole’s early life and her biography of her brother George.
Mary Ann Boole in Cork and Killaloe. Her attendance at Blarney Hydropathic Clinic run by Dr. Barter.
Later Life of Mary Ann Boole. Her relations with Boole’s wife and widow, Mary Everest Boole. Her suspicions about Boole’s premature death and her will.
Des and Yvonne are experts on all things Boole and we look forward to them sharing their knowledge with us. There will be copies of their book for sale on the evening.
