We are delighted to announce that January’s lecture will take place on Wednesday evening, 15th January at 7.30pm.
We eagerly await the return of Brian J. Goggin who is going to tell us all about the Limerick Navigation project which commenced in 1750. Brian delivered two fascinating talks in the early days of the society and we are delighted to welcome him back to us again.
This time he is going to talk about The Limerick Navigation which, despite it’s name, was mainly in Co Clare. Built from 1750 onwards to link Lough Derg, and the rest of the Shannon, to Limerick, it remained in use until the Shannon Scheme came into effect in the 1920s.
Brian will give us a photographic tour of what remains of the navigation, showing the wealth of historic features that are still to be seen and he will also highlight some of the problems with the design.
